A change for MD state song

Maryland could be changing its tune if a few state Delegates get their way.

Delegate Karen Lewis-Young made headlines a few weeks ago when she made her intentions of changing the state song “Maryland, My Maryland” public.

Lewis-Young said she began considering the proposal after several of her constituents brought to her attention that the state song contained divisive language, calling those those who aligned with the Union during the Civil War “Northern Scum.”
Lewis-Young is reportedly crafting legislation to nix the song and replace it.
The bill would not be introduced until next year’s General Assembly.
Democrat Delegate Sheree Sample-Hughes , who represents District 37-A says she has not heard any complaints about the song from her constituents, but if the legislation is introduced, she says she will do her due diligence and research the song and its history.
