Boxes of sweets prepared to bring holiday cheer to troops

Thousands of sweets heading overseas for troops made it to the American League 28 in Millsboro Saturday.

The trip is Operation Cookie Drop-Off.  Last year about 50,000 cookies were sent to troops through this event that gets locals to donate their baked cookies by the dozen to be sent to ground troops.

This time around, the cookies will be delivered to ten addresses, one in Iraq and nine more in Afghanistan.

The operation is a way to help soldiers get a little taste of home during the holiday season.

"When Christmas time comes around, being a mom and a grandmom, I think about what they're missing, defending our freedoms and our liberties," says organizer Judy Mangini, now in her 13th year.  "There's no other way to show my appreciation for them sacrificing time away from their families this time of year than to send them a little taste of Christmas to them."

Those boxes of cookies will be sent out Monday morning.
