AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparents Program recruiting volunteers for the fall

SALISBURY, Md.- A program is looking for seniors to work with kids as mentors.

Shore Up! is now recruiting senior volunteers for the AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparents Program.

Individuals ages 55 and older work with kids in Shore Up’s Early Head Start and Head Start Programs and in public schools, helping them with school readiness skills.

They said last year they weren’t able to do the program because of the pandemic, but seniors have been preparing for this fall by taking computer courses at Wor-Wic, to serve kids virtually, as well as in person.

“It’s a win win partnership because the students are able to be nurtured by loving caring seniors and the seniors isolation is reduced because they are out and about in the classrooms supporting all of our programs on a daily basis,” Joyce Farrare, AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparents Program Director, said.

These senior volunteers will work between 15 to 20 hours a week-or more.

They will receive a tax-free stipend.

If you’re interested in being a senior volunteer, you can call Farrare at 410-749-1142 ext. 1050
