Dover man charged after reportedly crashing car into canal

A Dover man is facing charges, after he reportedly drove into a canal in Delaware. DNREC Fish & Wildlife Natural Resources Police say on Monday afternoon, Officers responded to report of an overturned vehicle in the C&D Canal.

Once on scene, they reportedly found a 2004 Honda Accord in the water. According to the report, the car had run off a dirt road, and hit a telephone pole, before crashing over riprap along the canal banks, and eventually ended up partially submerged in the canal.

Police say the driver, William E. Ritter, 23, of Dover, was able to get out of the car, and walked to a nearby construction site, where 911 was called. Ritter was apparently treated for minor injuries at Christiana Medical Center, before being released.

Natural Resources Police charged Ritter with reckless driving for excessive speed, and damaging state property on the C&D Canal Conservation Area. He was was later released, pending a mandatory court appearance.
