2015 Governor’s Challenge Media Day- Boys Division
Boys Division:
Bennett- Dustin Mills takes over as varsity coach this season after the departure of Dean Sullivan. The Clippers lose key starters from last year including arguably the Bayside’s best player in Jorden Duffy, as well as all-conference player Barry Gaines to transfer. The Clippers are expected to be very young this year, leaning on alot of sophomores.
Laurel- The streak of three consecutive years of a DIAA state tournament playoff appearances with how young the Bulldogs are this season. A 15-6 season looks far away with the youth on the roster, but we’ve learned to never count out Coach Shawn Phillips in the job he does.
Mardela – The Warriors graduated their top player from a year ago in Nate McCoy, one of three seniors. The team will be searching for play makers this year, but expect to see good things out of guard Caleb Corbin.
Parkside- The best season as far as wins in program history, was also thought of as possibly the most disappointing for the Rams. With a roster as talented as any on the Shore, the Rams failed to make it to the region final. With a host of seniors last season, Parkside will look to lean on junior guard Gary Briddell to do a little of everything to keep the Rams competitive this year.
Stephen Decatur – The Seahawks are loaded with talent this year, but luck has not been on their side to start the season. Junior big Tyree Henry was lost for the season due to an ACL tear during football season, and returning conference player of the year Torrey Brittingham appears to be sidelined with a neck injury for some time. Decatur will look to lean on big man Keve Aluma, and guard Ja’ron Johnson to hold the load featuring some big expectations.
Sussex Tech- Brian McDermott takes over for Steve Perry who resigned this summer. McDermott inherits a totally different roster than one that made the DIAA tournament just one season ago. Brothers Dai’Ron and Tai’Ron Abbott have transferred and four of the five seniors from last year got significant playing time in 2014-15.
Washington- The Jaguars graduate quite the senior class, a team that fell in the sectional final to Pocomoke, led by 1,000 point scorer Shakur Cottman. Now that Nick Purnell’s most successful senior class is gone, the leftovers have a chance to be household names as well. Montrez Oliver and Kam Somers look to lead the young Jags back deep into the playoffs.
