OC fire department shares safe cooking tips

Thanksgiving is the peak day for cooking fires. Ryan Whittington the Deputy Fire Marshal in Ocean City,  says there’s plenty of ways to keep safe. The first tip is  to keep children at a safe distance before you begin to cook.

“You want to make sure you have a children free zone around your stove. Three to four feet so that your children cannot get burn when you open your oven or any other heating device or element you may have near the stove,” says Whittington.

For the children who like to sneak into the kitchen to check on what mom or dad are cooking, it is important to keep panhandles turned in to avoid burns.

Also, for the people that like frying turkey  for Thanksgiving, make sure you prior to heating up your oil do a test trial on water to avoid overflow as well as also prevent a fire.

Whittington also says that one of things to keep in mind while cooking is to avoid distractions and keep all eyes on what you’re cooking.

“When you hear a distraction or something that is going to  take your time away–immediately turn off the burners and take that call or you can ignore it or get back to cooking your family meal,” says Whittington.
