DE bill could implement, establish Black History education for grades K through 12 in each school district
DELAWARE- Delaware’s General Assembly is looking at a House bill that could change how schools teach Black History.
House Bill 198, would require each school district and charter school to establish and implement Black History education for students in grades K through 12.
The bill incorporates contemporary events into discussions of Black History.
We are told by a sponsor of the bill that this would be implemented into every aspect of the educational system, AND she hopes that this will allow people to start to acknowledge the importance of black history.
“So, it will be infused in the arts and to math and to science and to social studies and English and so what has happened in the past is that has not we just weren’t a part of the history, and black history is American history, that’s what people have to understand,” Rep. Sherry Dorsey Walker, (D) Delaware (RD 3), said.
We are told this bill will have a hearing next Wednesday in the education committee.
If the bill ends up passing, it starts immediately and must be implemented during the 2022 to 2023 school year.
Walker said members of the Sussex County Community are at the forefront of this bill, she says she’s hearing there’s a lot of pain within the black community in the county.
