Runners paint the town pink

The town of Dewey Beach was pink Saturday, as runners continued the goal of snuffing out breast cancer in The First State.

Over 2,500 runners turned out for a run, jog, or walk to raise money for the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, or DBCC.

"It's always a day for fellow survivors to get together.  One of my good friends is a survivor as well, so it's always a fun day and a great day for girls to get together for a great cause," said survivor Laura Ferguson.

"It's such an amazing thing, if you look around, there are survivors here, there's families here, everyone's affected by breast cancer, so the fact that you can come out here and have a wonderful time and still raise money for a great cause, it's a wonderful thing," said event developer Adam Howard.

In its seventh year, the event has taken the town by storm, and this year marked an incredible milestone.

"I believe we wrote a check for $12,000 to Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition.  And this year we're going to pass the $300,000 mark, so that's amazing," said Howard.

DBCC, the event benefiting from the run, is an organization that works year round on outreach, education and support of the countless people affected by this disease.

"This is about neighbors helping neighbors.  And running is a metaphor for life and the journey of breast cancer," said Christina Richter, Vice President of development at DBCC.  "We're just so proud that this money stays in Sussex County and Delaware."

And this is another event on Delmarva that brings visitors back year after year.

"I know that people like these folks from Pittsburgh, they'll come back every year.  People change their schedules to be here," said Kursh.

Today, DBCC remains the only organization in the State of Delaware focused solely on breast health issues, also lending a hand to neighboring states including Maryland.
