Dreaming of a white Christmas on Delmarva?

The chances of seeing snow on the ground on Christmas Day are not very high for Delmarva but it certainly is not impossible. The picture above shows the probability of a white Christmas with more than 1 inch of snow. The data is based on U.S. Climate Data Normals from 1981-2010, including temperature, precipitation, snowfall, heating and cooling degree days, frost/freeze dates, and growing degree days from 9,800 recording stations.
The areas in dark grey have less than a 10% chance of seeing snow, while the areas in white have more than a 90% chance. If you want a very good chance of seeing snow, you might want to travel to Minnesota, Maine, Upstate New York, The Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania and West Virginia, almost anywhere in Idaho, and the Rockies or the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Based on this study, Delmarva has less than a 10% chance of seeing snow, but again it is not impossible. This map is most useful to show places where snow is more likely. The weather patterns the week of Christmas will really help determine if the peninsula will see a white Christmas, so… stay tuned!
