Gov. Larry Hogan: “The time has come to get all of our children back into schools”

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Governor Larry Hogan is calling on all schools to reopen for hybrid learning no later than March 1st.

Schools statewide closed at the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, however, officials say there is little evidence supporting the claim that schools cannot reopen due to the virus. Many schools across the state reopened back in August, including most of the state’s public schools.

Hogan and State Superintendent Dr. Karen Salmon have written a letter to teachers union leaders, asking them to assist in the effort to reopen schools. That full letter can be found here.

In addition, new guidance regarding the reopening of schools was released on Thursday, with focus on students with disabilities, special learning needs, those with difficulty learning remotely, and career/technology students in the first phase of reopening. Elementary students would follow, then secondary students. That guidance can be found here.

The governor also added that if school districts fail to take measures to reopen, the state will pursue legal measures to ensure that schools do reopen.

“The time has come to get all of our kids back into the classrooms, and reopen our schools,” said Hogan.
