MD State Fire Mashal offers home heating tips

With winter months, comes cold temperatures and freezing conditions.

Most rely on different types of heat sources to keep warm and State Fire Marshal Brian S. Geraci is providing a few safety tips when using those heat sources.

Geraci advises to ensure that all chimneys in your home are cleaned frequently if you use them as your primary heat source, and to never use flammable fluid to start the fires.

If you use a furnace, make sure they are installed according to local fire codes and manufacturer’s instructions.

A few other tips include making sure you open a window for proper ventilation and always remember to install carbon monoxide alarms.
