Town considers its own umbrella ban

Bethany Beach may be following Rehoboth's lead in regulating their beaches' site lines, potentially banning certain tents and umbrellas on the beach.

Earlier this week the town's council met to lay the outlines out for a tent and umbrellas ban.  It would allow 36 cubic inch baby tents and umbrellas up to 8 feet in diameter.

A recommendation was also made to ban all larger tents, anything that is a tarp, cabana or a sports umbrella, or anything that would block the view of the people sitting in front of someone.

Rehoboth put similar measures in place earlier this year.

Some beach goers we spoke with say this is over regulation.  Others believe this can improve safety on the beach.

"I think everyone wants to enjoy the beach and everyone wants to see their kids playing on the beach and it really they have a hard time seeing their kids…  Maybe they should have a section of the beach that has that, but I don't think it should just be able to be popped open all over the beach," Bethany Beach visitor Jean Marie Youngren.

The council made no decision on the issue and will work to create questions to ask in a survey to be discussed at the next scheduled meeting set for October 22.
