Family needs community’s support after home caught on fire in Parsonsburg Wednesday morning
PARSONSBURG, Md.- For one family in Parsonsburg, their worst nightmare became a reality this week when their house caught on fire and now they are asking for the community’s support.
Around 2 in the morning on Wednesday, a family of six woke up to their mobile home filled with smoke here on Madeline Circle in Parsonsburg.
Elizabeth Nailon, one of the home owners was the first to discover the smoke.
“My first reaction was panic, the whole house was full of smoke, all I did was start yelling to wake them up,” Nailon said.
“The first thing we thought, was the kids have to get out of there, we gotta get out of here,” Elliott Johnson, the homeowner, said.
The Parsonsburg Fire Department said the fire began in the master bedroom and was caused by a space heater that was too close to common combustibles.
Family members add the incident happened in the blink of an eye.
“We have nothing, we walked out of there in the morning no shoes on, just the clothes, our pajamas,” Johnson said.
Since the fire, we’re told some community members have reached out.
Right now, the family is living in a hotel, but they have to be out of there by Thursday leaving them with questions on where they’ll live next.
“Shelter, that’s the main thing we are looking for anything for rent, or someone can point us in the right direction that’s the main thing,” Johnson said.
On top of that, they said being in a pandemic and having the holidays coming up makes their situation harder to get through.
So, they’re asking for the community to support them in any way possible.
But the homeowners said they’re keeping faith and they have their kids to help them through this.
“Hopefully everything will change and turn around, we are a family and we never give up,” Johnson said.
“It hurts, but I know I have to be strong for them, so they are the ones that are keeping me together right now,” Nailon said.
Elizabeth Nailon is warning the community that this can happen to anyone.
So, if you are using electric heaters make sure you keep an eye on them and that they are up-to-date.
She added right now the family needs essentials like food, clothing, and personal hygiene items.
