Wicomico County moves to nix speed cams

County officials are making moves to take an item off the books that they say hasn't been used in nearly five years.

Today at the  Wicomico County Council meeting a proposal to repeal the Speed Monitoring System was approved.

Officials say Sheriff Mike Lewis decided to stop using the speed cameras years ago because it was too expensive to maintain.

Now that the legislation has been approved, there will be a public hearing and after that the council will vote on the matter.

The move is a ceremonial one according to Council president, John Cannon.

"The resolution was to pretty much take the speed cameras off the books. We haven't really enforced the speed cameras for several years now and this was just simply sort of a house-keeping measure to take the formal process off the books."

County officials say there will be a public hearing on October 17th.

Sheriff Mike Lewis tells 47 ABC that the cameras have already been removed.

He says the only working speed cameras are in the city and are operated by Salisbury Police.
