Keve in the Clutch! Aluma Comes Up Big In Gutsey Decatur Win

The Stephen Decatur boys basketball team continues to add to their already impressive resume as they got Washington’s best shot Tuesday, but gutted out a 61-49 win. The win improves the Seahawks to 13-2, while the loss drops the Jaguars to 9-6.

The Seahawks would come out early and establish a small 5 point lead through most the first quarter. Ja’Ron Johnson would pour in 5 of his 11 points in the first quarter as Decatur would take a 3 point lead into the second quarter. There, the road team would continue to push and have a 9 point lead late following a Keve Aluma put back. Then with seconds left, Jordan Sterling would come up with a steal at mid court and take it the other way for a lay in to beat the buzzer to cut the Seahawks lead to 27-20 at the break.

Washington though came out of the locker room ready to go. Montraz Oliver would find his shooting touch, scoring 12 points in the quarter alone to help power his team to a 2 points lead headed to the 4th. The Jaguars seemingly had the Seahawks on the ropes, but Decatur would answer the call in a big way. Aluma would begin to take over on the block, either scoring put backs or drawing fouls on Washington’s front line. The attention he drew began to open looks for other players on the wing. Brittingham began to get into the lane, connecting on floaters or drawing fouls and earning trips to the line. The lead would grow to 8 with under two minutes to go after Brittingham drew the 5th personal from Washington’s big Tyler Paulson. Shortly after that though, the Jags would respond by drawing the 5th foul on Brittingham. Decatur though would extend their lead as the Seahawks were connecting on their free throw attempts, and the Jags were leaving important points at the line. Decatur held a 5 point lead late before Aluma would close the door. The big would split a pair of free throws at the line, then alter a shot at the other end resulting in a Washington turnover. On the following possession, he would score a post move to push the lead to 8. He then followed that with a defensive rebound and outlet for a score to put the game away.

Washington returns to work Thursday when they host Pocomoke, while Decatur host Snow Hill on Thursday.
