UMES Drops 2OT Thriller To FAMU

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men’s basketball team dropped a heart breaker Monday night when they fell to Florida A&M 81-80 in double overtime. The loss drops the Hawks to 8-21 on the year.

The Hawks would jump out to an early lead in the game as Dominique Elliott would have a strong night. His scoring along with a couple outside shots from Ryan Andino and Devin Martin would have them up 2 at the break, before the Rattlers would fight back in the second half. FAMU would eventually take a small lead late before Elliott would knock down a mid range jumper to tie up the game with 30 seconds left. The Rattlers would hold for the last shot, but K’Ja Johnson would miss a lay in at the buzzer, and we would head to overtime. There, Andino would knock down another long ball to push the Hawks lead to 5, but again the Rattlers would fight back. An and 1 would get them within 2, then Martin would turn it over at mid court, leading to a break away lay in to tie up the game. After another UMES turnover, the Rattlers would again have a chance to win it at the buzzer, but this time Malcolm Bernards jumper was off the mark, and we would head to double OT. There, Martin scored 6 straight points to help UMES to a 4 point lead. Following an and 1 that got the Rattlers with 1, they would have 10 seconds left with the ball and a chance to win it.  Craig Bowman would get it at the top of the arc with Mark Blackmon all over him. He’d lose the ball for a second, before finally grabbing ahold of it and firing from just inside the arc, finding the bottom of the net for the go-ahead score. Martin would have one last chance for UMES, and would get the ball up the court, but couldn’t get his shot off in time as the Hawks ended up falling in heartbreaking fashion.

UMES returns to work on Saturday when they host DSU.
