Delaware’s Jessica Scarane challenging U.S. Senator Chris Coons
DELAWARE – Democrat Jessica Scarane is challenging United States Senator Chris Coons in the upcoming Delaware primary election on September 15th.
The Wilmington resident currently works at a digital marketing agency and has previous experience with non-profits in the state. She says her platform is based on helping working class families with a focus on universal healthcare, affordable housing, fighting climate change, ending mass incarceration and getting equitable education funding.
When it comes to the response to COVID-19, she believes the current economic challenges and public health concerns could have been avoided if the situation was approached differently from the start. “Seeing the way our federal government in particular has allowed a public health crisis to cascade into an economic crisis and now into a housing crisis, has left people feeling really desperate. And it didn’t have to be this way. We could have said, we have a public health crisis the best way to handle this is is to stay home, we’re going to ensure people have the money and supplies they need to do that,” says Scarane. “So when we see the frustration that people have with shutting things down and telling people to stay home, I understand it because you’re also not providing the things that people need to maintain their livelihood. And that was the piece that was really missing.”
As for how she plans to represent Sussex and Kent Counties, Scarane believes residents all across the state experience the same issues like clean drinking water, flooding and internet connectivity. She says many of those concerns can be addressed by investing in and funding infrastructure.
