New law will require Del. schools to teach about Holocaust, genocides to students

DOVER, Del. – Middle and high school students in Delaware will soon learn more about the Holocaust and other genocides beginning in the 2021-22 school year.

On Thursday, Governor John Carney signed House Bill 318, which requires school districts and charter schools to implement an annual curriculum on the Holocaust and genocide for students in grades 6 through 12.

Under this bill, we’re told the Halina Wind Preston Holocaust Education Committee can provide guidance, academic content assistance, resources, and assistance with curricula development to deliver quality Holocaust and genocide education.

“By developing a curriculum on the Holocaust and genocide, we are sharing with future generations our commitment to opposing hatred and intolerance wherever it exists,” said Governor Carney. “Thank you to Representative Heffernan and to the members of the General Assembly for passing this important piece of legislation.”
