Georgetown man dies after bus crash

Authorities say that a crash involving a DART bus and a motorcycle, killed a Georgetown man.

Delaware State Police say on Friday, a DART bus collided with a motorcycle on South Bedford Street, in Georgetown.

According to the report, just before 7:30 PM, 51-year-old Selena Cannon, of Bridgeville, was driving a 2009 DART bus when she was stopped in the left turn lane from southbound South Bedford Street to turn into the DART bus yard, just north of US 113. Police say that as Cannon began to cross the northbound lanes of South Bedford Street, she pulled directly into the path of a 2000 BMW motorcycle, driven by 68-year-old James L. Barron, of Georgetown.

Authorities say that the front of the motorcycle then hit the front of the DART bus, causing Barron to be thrown from from the motorcycle. Barron then reportedly struck the windshield of the bus. Officials say that he was wearing a Delaware Department of Transportation approved helmet at the time of collision.

Barron was then transported by Delaware State Police helicopter to Christiana Hospital, where he was admitted in critical condition. Troopers say on Monday, Barron died from the injuries he sustained during the crash.

Officials say that Cannon was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. She was apparently the only person on the bus at the time, and she was uninjured. Delaware State Police say that Cannon was cited with failure to yield the right of way on a left hand turn.

This crash remains under investigation by DSP Collision Reconstruction Team. Officials say that more charges are pending once the investigation concludes.
