Wicomico Sheriff’s Office warning of phone scam
SALISBURY, Md. – The Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens of a phone scam that is circulating the area.
The recipients of these calls are told that they are the subject of a pending warrant out of the Circuit Court for Wicomico County but that the warrant can be satisfied with a quick financial transaction over the phone. We’re told that during these incidents, callers have represented themselves with the names of actual deputies with the Sheriff’s Office. They have also created a caller identification to make it appear that the call is from the Wicomico County area.
Citizens are reminded that the Sheriff’s Office will never call someone and encourage them to make a payment over the phone to keep themselves from being arrested. If you receive an unsolicited call where you are asked to send money to avoid an arrest, you should remember that is not the practice of law enforcement.
