Law enforcement looks to get community involved

National Night Out is a time for the community and its law enforcement to connect and have a good time.

In Milton, the Police Department is trying to connect with its citizens in a different way.  An Auxiliary Patrol made up of volunteers to give the department another set of eyes and ears in the community.

It's a volunteer patrol, they would go out and assist the police officers.  There's extra eyes out on the road, they have a vehicle as you can see behind me," said Milton Police Chief Robert Longo.

The vehicle would be manned by two individuals.  Patrols would assist the department in residential and commercial area checks, community events, crime prevention programs and traffic control.

Longo says he's hopeful the patrol will be up and running by the end of the year and bring positive results.  Results similar to a neighboring city who gave Longo the idea in the first place.

"Actually I got the original idea from the Milford police department.  They have a citizens patrol or senior patrol that they call it."

The department is seeking retirees or anyone who has an interest in law enforcement, even if you're not from Milton.

"Again we have to clear you before you come through, we have to check your driving record because it is no different than being a civilian employee, except they're volunteering their time and helping us to keep our community safe," said Longo.

If you are interested in joining this auxiliary force, contact the Milton Police Department at 302.684.8547.  Applicants will undergo a background check and a driving record check.
