4th Annual 12 for 1 Diaper Drive kicks off

Diaper Drive, Jackie Weisman of 12 for 1

According to a 2016 government report, nearly 1 in 3 American families struggle to afford diapers.

With the average family spending just under $1,000 on diapers, per child every year.

Those startling statistics are what inspired Jackie Weisman, an Eastern Shore native, to start a diaper drive known as 12 for 1.

In 2014,  Weisman says she realized there are limited resources for people who can't afford this basic necessity.

In it's first year, she says she collected just over 8,000 diapers.

Now 4 years later, the drive kicks off Tuesday, lasting through out the month August.

Weisman says her goal this year is 12,000 diapers.

She tells 47 ABC the one thing that surprised her in all of this was that not many people knew about this common struggle families face.

"I didn't realize that diapers were not covered under WIC or food stamps. And I like educating year round about it and people are surprised and equally outraged," Weisman said.

Donated diapers can be opened but must be unused. She is also accepting unopened diaper rash cream and wipes.

The donations will be given to St. Martin's Ministries in Ridgley, Maryland.

There are drop off locations through out Delmarva, and Weisman is accepting gift card donations as well as donations by mail.
