Cooling centers open during intense heat

Somerset County residents seeking relief from the intense heat in the coming days are being told that they can visit the following locations to stay cool.
Princess Anne Library (11767 Beechwood St., Princess Anne), 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, 410-651-0852
- Crisfield Library (100 Collins St., Crisfield), 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, 410-968-0955
- UMES Student Services Center (30665 College Backbone Road, Princess Anne), Sunday 12:00 pm – 6:00 p.m., 410-651-6590
- Residents are being told to take their own food, drinks and medications to the cooling centers. Pets are not permitted.
The Somerset County Emergency Management and the Somerset County Health Department are telling area residents to the take the heat seriously and to take appropriate steps to stay safe. Some tips to stay cool include:
- Drinking more water than usual
- Avoiding alcohol and drinks with high amounts of sugar
- Staying in the shade
- Wearing light weight, light colored clothing
- Taking cool showers or baths
