Animal Ordinance Committee presents recommendations to Wico. Co. Council

The Wicomico County Council met on Tuesday morning to get an update on the Animal Ordinance Committee. The committee is made up of members of the general public.

During the meeting, the chair and executive director for the Wicomico County Humane Society, Aaron Balsamo, informed the council of changes that he would like to see for pets. Those changes include how to deal with feral cats, the sizes and conditions of dog houses and how to deal with pets during inclement weather.

Balsamo says, "If there's a heat advisory and the temperature is up above 100 or up above 90 and the heat index is above 120, dogs are really, really quick to catch things like heat stress or heat stroke and staying on the flip side in the winter, if there's a wind chill advisory we're trying to get something on the books to where people have to bring their dogs in because dogs are just like us."

Balsamo says he was told that the changes have to go through the legal channel first, so there is no timeline on when they will take effect.
