Warriors Claim 1A State Title!

The Pocomoke boys basketball team got to celebrate their first state title since 2002 when they defeated Lake Clifton 64-56 on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors never led til the 4th quarter, but their seniors never gave in and they were able to battle from behind to pull out the thrilling win.
The Warriors came out of the gates sluggish. After Jerrick Johnson hit a 3-ball in the corner, the offense would slow down and 21-10 headed to the second. There, Tyler Nixon would take over for the Warriors. He got himself into the paint, routinely drawing fouls and was able to knock down his free throws. After he got a couple buckets drop, LiCurtis Whitney would go to work on the block as well. They would combine to help get Pocomoke within 36-31. The Offense then really began to struggle in the third as Pocomoke was both unable to make short buckets, while also missing free throws. Their defense and rebound would keep them in it though. Being down just 6 headed to teh 4th, Tyrone Matthews would finally get going, scoring a couple lay ins as well as free throws to get the game tied. Then once they had pulled even, Nixon would find Tyree Thornton who was able to drop in a couple scores. With the game still hanging in the balance, Pocomoke was able to get defensive stops and hit their free throws down the stretch to pull out the dramatic win.
