SU professor wants to eliminate social worker stereotype

March 24, 2016
Michelle Mackonochie,

The month of March brings many things, including “National Social Work Month”. But the term “social worker” can mean many things. Dr. Allessia Owens, an assistant professor of social work at Salisbury University says a social worker can engage in many different activities such as working in therapeutic services, health services, child protective services, some even work in the criminal justice system. Doctor Owens says one of the tenants of the profession is to help the most vulnerable.

Dr. Owens tells 47 ABC, “We are in the trenches, we are talking with people who may be struggling with substance abuse, struggling with housing issues, and helping them to make decisions that are in their best interest and also advocating to them.”

Dr. Owens says social workers help those in need. Fun fact, there are over 600,000 social workers in the nation.
