Reasoning behind adding GMO labeling to products

More companies are adding GMO labeling, likely to get ahead of the potential that it could be legally required, as it will be in Vermont starting in July. According to ABC News, Mars has just added the labeling to the back of its M&M packets.

According to the Institute of Responsible Technology, a GMO, or genetically modified organism, is the result of lab process where the DNA of one species is artificially added to another product. Tamara Giles of PRMC says the idea for labels, is so consumers have an informed choice.

Giles tells 47 ABC, “I think it’s important for consumers to have the right to choose the type of food that they want to and the label makes it a lot easier for someone to see it rather than having to go to a website or call the company they can look right on the label and see if it’s there.”

More than 1,700 studies, conducted worldwide, have demonstrated genetically modified foods are safe for human and animal consumption.
