Avery Twirls Gem In Blue Raiders Upset Win Over Sussex Tech

The Woodbridge baseball team made the trip over to Sussex Tech Monday afternoon, and behind a rock solid start from Doug Avery, pulled out a 4-1 upset win over the Ravens. The win improves the Blue Raiders to 2-0 on the year, while the loss drops the Ravens to 1-1-1.
Avery would get the start on the mound for the Blue Raiders, and would navigate through a swirling wind, and a dangerous Tech line up. The Ravens would have the first opportunity to score in the 1st, after a blooper hit to right would get dropped by the right fielder on the foul line. The ump would rule it a fair ball, and the runner would advance to 3rd. Avery though would force a ground ball to get out of the inning. The teams would be tied up at 0-0 headed to the bottom of the 3rd before the Tech would get their offense rolling. After a single and a stolen base. A fielders choice would advance Trent Hearn to 3rd. Kyle Lux would then hit a high blooper that would get caught up in the wind, and drop in shallow left allowing Hearn to score the first run of the game.
It didn’t take very long for the Blue Raiders to answer. In the top of the 4th, Woodbridge would have two quick outs to open the frame, before showing some true patience at the plate. They would get back to back singles, followed by a walk to load the bases. That’s when Avery would help his own cause, hitting a 2 RBI single to center scoring Chase Marvel and Gabe Wescott. After the Blue Raiders drew another walk, Bragg Davis would hit a chopper to 3rd, but the relay to 2nd would be high allowing the runners to be safe, and scoring Garrett Temple. Kolby Rusi would then draw a walk with the bases loaded to bring in the 4th run of the inning. That would be more than enough for Avery who continued to force ground outs with easy, coasting the rest of the way for the win.
Woodbridge returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Delmar, while Sussex Tech travels to Newark on Tuesday.
