New tax deadline: What you need to know

47 ABC – Normally taxes would be due on April 15th, 2020. However thanks to an extension, you have 90 more days until this year’s new tax deadline if you haven’t filed yet.

Refunds are still being given out and if you file electronically nothing is going to change. If you file paper returns, Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot says you’ll have to wait two or three weeks because they are very short staffed. The decrease in staffing also means that you shouldn’t expect help from a live person if you call customer service at 1-800-MD-TAXES. The Comptroller says email is a better way to get assistance. The Maryland Comptroller’s Office employees continue to answer general taxpayer questions via email at taxhelp@marylandtaxes.gov.

Franchot says this extension essentially gives people three more months to keep their taxes in their pockets. “We are extending these things in an effort to give a small fiscal break to folks that are confused about when the economy is going to open back up again.”

He also says if you’re a small business that’s already paid taxes you can actually get your March, April and May payments back. This extension means you will not be penalized for late payments if 2019 tax payments are made by July 15th. Given the economic situation, you can also be put on a payment plan if you end up having trouble paying your taxes come July 15th.

Delaware taxpayers with questions about the status of their refund may use the state’s online tool or e-mail DOR_PublicService@delaware.gov. Delaware taxpayers who are unable to meet the July 15th filing deadline may file an extension request online on or before July 15 by emailing DOR_PublicService@delaware.gov or through their tax preparer.
