Greenwood man arrested on drug and firearm charges after police chase

Paul Edwards, 30, Greenwood

Police say that a Greenwood man has been arrested on drug and firearm charges in Georgetown after he fled from a traffic stop on Tuesday morning.

At 10:55 a.m., police officers say that they saw a white Hyundai with expired registration traveling on North Bedford Street. When officers stopped the car, 30-year-old Paul Edwards reportedly got out and ran away.

During the chase, police say, Edwards returned to his car and drove away from police. Officers then chased the Hyundai through several streets until the Hyundai crashed into a fence on Lynch's Lane. After the crash, police say Edwards left the passenger side of the car and ran away from the accident scene. Officers then reportedly tased Edwards and took him into custody.

A search of the Hyundai reportedly found drug paraphernalia, about one gram of marijuana and a semi automatic handgun. Investigators say that the handgun found in the car had been reported as stolen.

Edwards was arrested for disregarding a police officer signal, malicious mischief by a motor vehicle, aggressive driving, resisting arrest, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, receiving a stolen firearm, possession of marijuana and numerous other motor vehicle moving violations.

Edwards was arraigned at the Justice of The Peace Court #2 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institute in lieu of $16,606 cash bond.
