Mayhem In Mardela! Genga’s Walk-Off Helps Warriors Shock Rams

The Mardela softball team earned their biggest win of the season Monday, and they had to battle to get extras to even do it. The Warriors’ Sydney Goertzen would score the game tying run in the 7th to force extras, where Logan Genga would smack the walk-off RBI single to right. The win improves the Warriors to 14-3 on the year, while the loss drops the Rams to 8-4.

The Warriors would strike first in the bottom of the first when Kalie Adkins would blast a 2 RBI double to center field, scoring Kasey Goshorn and Goertzen. The Rams would then have an answer in a big way in the 3rd. They would plate 5 runs off several base knocks, including a couple of RBI singles from Kara Downs and Taylor Nichols. Mardela continued to battle though, and would climb back within 1 after getting to in the bottom of that frame. The Warriors might have gotten more if not for an incredible catch by the Rams center fielder Katelyn Records, which robbed Adkins of a hit, but still resulted in a sac fly. The Rams would take their 1 run lead into the 7th, before Goertzen had one of the biggest at bats of the game. She battled back from down 0-2, to draw a walk. Then on the next pitch, she would steal second. The throw would find the outfield, and she would take off for 3rd, round the bag and score to tie the game. We would head to extras where the Warriors would have a chance to win it with Logan Genga at the dish. She would then turn on one, send it to right field where it dropped in for the game winning, walk-off RBI single. This was her first walk-off hit of her career.

Parkside returns to work on Wednesday when they host Wi-Hi, while Mardela travels to Bennett on Wednesday.
