UMES PGM Program trailblazes in first place after all-female tournament

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore created history through the PGM Golf Management program. The young ladies were the first to ever compete in an all-female tournament.

That tournament was the Dormie Network PGA/PGM Women’s Championship in Omaha, Nebraska.

G.Sean Schley is the Director of PGA Golf Management Program. He said the girls should be honored for their accomplishments.

“Very few people get a chance to put their hand in the air and say they are number 1. But these ladies, Ms. Hailey Fisher, Ms. Sydney Raines, Ms. Liu, Ms. Fatima, have done an excellent job representing the university.”

Day 1 was played at Quarry Oaks Golf Club under the scramble format. This format is where every player hits a shot, and the team selects the single best shot, and all players play their next shot from that location until the ball is holed.

Day 2 was played at Champions Run under the best ball format. This format is where every player plays their own ball from tee to green on every hole, and the lowest individual score among the team members is recorded as the team’s score for that hole.

and Day 2 at Champions Run – playing best ball. The ladies are proud of their accomplishments.

Tinyan Liu was more than excited. “It means a lot to bring home title for our team.” Her peer, Sydney Raines, was proud of how the team faced adversity during the tournament.

“That’s the important part of playing competitive golf. Go out there, and even if you don’t have your best stuff, being able to figure out how to shoot a good score.”

UMES surpassed competitors including UNLV, Penn State, and the University of Nebraska. From the programs’ viewpoint, it represents a chance to establish the school’s recognition.

Bushra Fatima said that being one of the trailblazers in this women’s tournament was the most important thing. “What made this tournament even more special was seeing more women who share the passion for golf come together.”

Hailey Fisher couldn’t agree more. “The fact we were able to stamp our name and take home a trophy is kind of crazy because that hasn’t been done for us before.”
