Beyond the Walls art exhibit
REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.– The Beyond the Wall art exhibit offers individuals who are incarcerated opportunities to learn, create, and grow through visual arts.
The exhibit is part of the larger Prison Arts Program, which offers both tattoo and visual arts programming for individuals incarcerated in Delaware’s Level Five correctional facilities.
Coordinator Alexis Blocksom says the program has had more than a positive impact.
“They actually have like weekly lessons they do,” Blocksom said. “They have a book that they go through with different lessons and they get certificates at the end on the things that they paint.”
The program also acts as a form of therapy for the artists– supporting emotional expression, reflection, and personal growth.
“It also helps them in so many ways, especially mentally,” Blocksom said. “The program is kind of like a form of art therapy and it kind of helps them stay out of trouble.”
Inmates also have the opportunity to share and sell their artwork publicly, even earning commission. The Prison Art Program partners with numerous events each year to sell the inmates works of art, giving the term “Beyond the Walls a whole new meaning.
“It just builds esteem and confidence in themselves,” Blocksom said. “So it is very inspiring to watch and see everyone be so focused on what they’re doing.”
The Beyond the Walls art exhibit is on display at the Rehoboth Art League until November 1st.
