Worcester County Celebrates Walk Maryland Day
WORCESTER COUNTY, Md. -Residents across Worcester County hit the trails on, Oct. 7th, to celebrate Walk Maryland Day, with a variety of organized strolls through the picturesque parks of the county.
Worcester County Health Department celebrated with events spread across five different parks within the county, with locations in Snow Hill, Pocomoke City, Berlin, Ocean City, and Ocean Pines.
Crystal Bell of the Worcester County Health Department was at Stephen Decatur Park in Berlin, and explained what makes walking, worth celebrating.
“It is recognised in the state of Maryland as the official state exercise.” Said Bell. “Walking is one of the easiest and free things that people can do to stay as active and healthy as possible.”
At Veterans Memorial Park, Ocean Pines Recreation & Parks Director Debbie Donahue explained how the initiative impacts the local community.
“We have a lot of seniors, the best that we can do is to give them information on how to stay healthy, how to keep moving.” Said Donahue.
The county also promoted the “Just Walk Worcester” program, which provides information on local walking and hiking trails, and rewards self-reported mileage with prizes.
Crystal Bell and the health department hope to remind people, that being physically active, doesn’t have to be hard.
“Even if it’s starting out with 15 minutes of physical activity and you breaking it up in your day.” Said Bell. “The goal is to get in at least 60 minutes a day. But again, you could do that in your own time, your way. The most important thing is ensuring that you’re getting in your recommended physical activity.”
