Ocean City Beach Patrol Issues High Surf Alert

OCEAN CITY, Md. – As strong offshore winds are causing powerful currents and waves, Ocean City Beach Patrol is reminding beach-goers to stay safe.

OCBP put out a “high surf alert” From Tuesday September 22nd through Thursday September 24th. The alert warns of powerful shore break, strong rip currents, and advises against swimming.

OCBP Lieutenant Skip Lee said they made the call due to the harsh surf conditions.

“The water was restricted for swimming today.” Said Lee. “We are allowing surfers with leashes and boogie boarders with fins to go in. But the speed and direction of the current and the height of the waves, we did not feel it was appropriate for people to go in the water.”

Lee did explain though that despite the hazardous conditions in the water, it is a still a great time for seashell hunting on the shore.
