15th Annual Frederick Douglass Day Saturday

(EASTON, Md) – Talbot County is celebrating the legacy of one of the Eastern Shore’s most famous abolitionists.

The Frederick Douglass Society is preparing to host their 15th annual Frederick Douglass Day celebration commemorating the unveiling of the Frederick Douglass Statue outside the Talbot County Courthouse.

Festivities begin Friday evening with a wreath laying at the courthouse, and on Saturday the fun continues at the Talbot County Library and on West and Dover Streets.

The Frederick Douglass Honor Society says they’re looking forward to sharing Douglass’ story with history buffs.

Timothy Young, who serves on the Frederick Douglass Day Committee tells us about Douglass’ connection to talbot County.

He says, “When Frederick Douglass was a slave in St. Michael’s and he tried to escape the first time, he had to walk in chains from St Michael’s to this courthouse to be put in jail. And then later in his life, he came back when he was in his 80s and gave a speech here, right here on the, the courthouse steps.”
