“Cooking Up Health” Gives Worcester County Tasteful Nutrition Tips
SNOW HILL, Md. – “Cooking up Health”, a 6-week long nutrition and cooking series hosted by Worcester County Health Department and lead by University of Maryland Extension, is a free course that aims to teach attendees everything they need to know about eating healthy.
Lynn Matava of UMD Extension is an instructor for the course, and explains that eating healthy, doesn’t have to be hard or bland.
“So many of the things we teach in this class are very simple.” Said Matava. “They don’t take a lot of time. They don’t take special resources. We’re just trying to show people how to make the most of what they have.”
Topics discussed in the series include growing produce, food preservation, meal budgeting, and of course, how to plan a nutritious, yet tasty, meal. The classes are funded by a grant from CareFirst, which is part of a bigger initiative to put healthy food on the plates of Worcester County families.
Mimi Dean is the director of prevention services for the Worcester County Health Department, and helped to organize the course.
“We had these community gardens and we had these seeds.” Said Dean. “But do people actually know what to do with these seeds? Are they feeling confident in their ability to do this? And how can we take it a step further?”
During today’s class, attendees learned how to make a fresh green salad, topped with a homemade dressing. They then learned how to use the scraps from the chives, to grow new green onions.
Instructor Lynn Matava, hopes the attendees can bring the recipes demonstrated in the class, back to their own kitchens.
“I’d really personally like to see people leaving this class with, an excitement for getting back to kind of having a hands on relationship with their food and where their food comes from, and just making more of it at home.” Said Matava.
The next course will be held on Oct. 5th, for more information, visit https://worcesterlibrary.org/article/cooking-health-six-week-hands-class-begins-sept-14
