Sussex Family YMCA Healthy Aging Day
REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.– September is Healthy Aging month a national observance that is dedicated to inspiring older adults to improve their physical, mental, and social health.
The Sussex Family YMCA in Rehoboth Beach hosted their own Healthy Aging day and membership director Shay Almond says it’s a day to bring the community together.
“We know most of our agers have trouble getting these resources available to them,” Almond said. “Some of our members come here with a friend so it just makes it easier when we have everything available for them all in one place.”
In addition to resources hosted by the Y, Beebee Healthcare was also at the event to not only share medical perspectives on healthy aging but to shine a light on the value of staying social.
“Oh it’s so crucial,” Schaber said. “It’s one of the number one ways to live the longest, best life, is by being part of a community and having that support.”
But for member Kathryn Burgwin she was able to find her community through playing pickleball.
“Well the pickleball tournament,” Burgwin said. “You have things you love to do but then you start to make friends and you make a community.” “I love this place if this ever goes away it will not be a good thing in my mind.”
For many seniors staying healthy isn’t just about physical health it is also about staying connected and today’s events gave them tools and resources for them to be able to do just that right here in their own community.
