MARYLAND – Congressman Andy Harris, M.D. (MD-01) introduced legislation on Tuesday to temporarily suspend the federal gas tax amid increasing fuel prices

The federal gas tax currently stands at 18.4 cents per gallon for gasoline and 24.4 cents per gallon for diesel. The proposed bill would suspend those taxes through the end of the year.

“Families and truckers need some immediate relief from the high cost of fuel to drive to work or haul goods across this country,” Congressman Harris said in a statement. “It’s time right now to temporarily suspend the federal gas and diesel tax until the end of the year.”

The bill also states that transportation motor fuel manufacturers that fail to reduce gas and diesel prices to would be subject to monetary penalties.
