Early Morning Fire Damages Bethany Beach Residence

BETHANY BEACH, Del. – Multiple fire companies responded to an early morning fire in Bethany Beach on Friday.

At 3:00 a.m. on Sept. 4, during an early-morning thunderstorm, crews with the Bethany Beach, Millville, Roxana, Ocean City, and Frankford fire companies responded to a four-story single-family residence in the 29000 block of Surfside Drive in the Gulls Nest community. Crews responded and found no visible smoke or fire, but were able to detect an odor of smoke in the area. After unsuccessfully searching for a spare key on the property, firefighters forced entry to investigate.

As firefighters advanced through the residence, they encountered a significant smoke condition on the fourth floor. Fire was found to be concealed within the walls and ceiling. Due to the home’s construction and the difficulty accessing the concealed fire, additional assistance was requested from the Selbyville and Dagsboro fire companies.

Crews operated for approximately two hours before bringing the fire under control. The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office is reportedly investigating the origin and cause of the fire.
