Harvesting Hope calls for volunteers for Reading Social
Cambridge, Md. – A local nonprofit providing behavioral health support services and resources to the community is seeking volunteers for its Reading Social events.
Harvesting Hope Youth and Family Wellness Inc., based in Cambridge, is seeking volunteers for its next Reading Social on Sept. 12. Officials say the Reading Social promotes literacy and art engagement while offering reading assistance to young children. Children can read to a volunteer or be read to, and pick a free book to take home.
“We also do art and activities so they don’t just come and read books. They also have activities as well, and we provide snacks for them,” said Ja’Mece Molock, who was also representing Harvesting Hope. “We provide one-on-one tutoring, and we also have reading programs.”
Jaden Jones, whose aunt, Omeaka Jackson, founded Harvesting Hope, said the more people can express diverse perspectives, the better. Especially, he said, to help children experiencing mental health problems or to help children learn to read.
“The message that I really want to get across is, like, we stronger together. All of us, everybody together. We just stronger together,” he said.
Reading Socials are held on the first and second Saturdays of every month. The first Saturday is usually held in Cambridge. However, Molock said that this month, there will be a Reading Social in the Hurlock Community Center on Sept. 12 from 10 a.m. to noon.
“So we are looking for volunteers to help with youth literacy. If anybody would like to volunteer to come and read, we are open to that,” Molock said.
