Charlie Paparella on Living in the Moment

DELMARVA – In this week’s edition of Back on the Road with Charlie Paparella, brought to you by Furniture & More Gone Coastal, Charlie writes a poem about what he says is the only time that really matters: now.

“Summer is the change of season that all of us lament, and we long for its return from wherever it was sent.
But it’s only humans who like to apply our quaint but manufactured notion of time to things that are unaffected by the countless machinations of the human mind.
Like interest rates and sovereign states, like ghosts and goblins and pearl covered gates… only human minds contemplate such unlikely things as time.
But of all of our notions, however conceived, there is but one that we all must believe… that ever present, both forward and behind, our personal gate-keeper, the thing that we call ‘time’.
It is, unlike sorrow and joy, unlike longing and grief, the thing which have, through our experience earned our belief…
Not one of us, from Adam and Eve to this morning’s calf from a momma cow… have ever experienced any time but that fleeting moment that we call ‘now’.
We have pictures of the past, but not the moments they describe,and we can never go back there, no matter how hard we may try.
As for times yet to come, there’s really no debate… If you want to see the future, you’ll just have to wait.
It’s a conundrum, a sticky widget, it’ll furrow your brow… but you will never escape this moment… the moment we call right now.”
