Gov. Meyer Signs John Lewis Voting Rights Act

WILMINGTON, Del. – Governor Matt Meyer has signed legislation that hopes to protect the rights of American voters.

Thursday, he signed House Bill 444, the Delaware John Lewis Voting Rights Act, with goal of establishing state-level protections for voting rights.

House Bill 444 establishes a Delaware Voting Rights Act that prohibits voter discrimination, voter suppression and vote dilution while creating mechanisms to challenge violations of voting rights protections.

The legislation also requires the Department of Elections to provide language assistance to expand access to the ballot for Delaware voters.

The law allows for protected classes or their representatives to file civil actions in regards to actions that allegedly violate voters rights protections.

In relation to this legislation, Governor Meyer stated, “when Washington retreats on voting rights, Delaware steps up.”

House Bill 444 takes effect July 1, 2027.
