Small businesses are at a disadvantage due to sweeping tariffs

MARYLAND, – Senator Angela Alsobrooks, Congressman Glenn Ivey, and Senator Chris Van Hollen hosting a virtual town hall Tuesday evening in a with the focus on helping small businesses in Maryland.

Spanning the past two months, the Federal Government has been actively processing applications for tariff refunds following the Supreme Court’s ruling.

The reimbursement provided does not entirely compensate for the decrease in sales that smaller businesses faced, nor does it fully restore the customer base that some of them unfortunately lost.

During the town hall, Senator Alsobrooks emphatically stated that their ongoing struggle is far from over. “Maryland is fighting from Capitol Hill on down.”

Senator Chris Van Hollen “That includes access to capital for those who work with the federal government, it means navigating a tough federal contracting process, and of course, workforce.”

President Trump and his administration are of the firm belief that these sweeping tariffs serve as an indispensable instrument for the revitalization of domestic manufacturing, the reduction of the national debt, and the application of pressure on international trade partners.

U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen, however, contends that these specific actions have resulted in the isolation of small business owners, thus placing them at a disadvantage.

“Make sure the Trump administration can’t eviscerate the federal agencies that are responsible for enforcement, and the federal agencies that are supposed to help small businesses.”
