‘No Queens’ signs spark controversy, investigation request in Wicomico County
WICOMICO CO., Md. — Over the past month, political campaign signs lined the streets of Wicomico County. But a few weeks ago, a different kind of sign began appearing.
The “No Queens” signs have sparked widespread discussion across the county and prompted the Wicomico County Republican Central Committee to request an investigation by the Office of the Special Prosecutor.
The group calling itself “No Queens” describes itself as a coalition of local Republicans, Democrats and independents who share concerns about leadership in Wicomico County.
The group’s stated mission is to replace Wicomico County Executive Julie Giordano at the ballot box. Members said they are not funded by or affiliated with any candidate, campaign, political party or county official. However, they said they will not disclose their identities because of their roles in the community.
“The coalition includes prominent community members, Wicomico County employees, City of Salisbury employees and others whose professional lives intersect with local government. Some members genuinely fear workplace retaliation, career damage or loss of employment if they are publicly identified as critics of County Executive Julie Giordano,” the group said.
Giordano disputed the group’s claims, saying those behind the movement are currently running for office.
“That should concern every voter. Political campaigns and advocacy efforts are expected to follow the law, yet these signs were placed throughout Wicomico County without the required authority line and were illegally installed in public rights-of-way. As a result, they have been removed,” Giordano said.
The coalition has also launched a website that they said, “distinguishes documented facts from political opinion, commentary and satire.”
Giordano called the group a political gimmick using unlawful campaign tactics.
“This appears to be nothing more than a political stunt designed to generate headlines and benefit my opponent’s campaign. Instead, it has raised serious questions about the judgment of those involved and their willingness to ignore the very rules they expect everyone else to follow,” Giordano told WMDT.
She added, “The people of Wicomico County deserve honest debate about the issues that matter — public safety, fiscal responsibility, economic growth and improving the quality of life for our residents — not anonymous political gimmicks and unlawful campaign tactics.”
Most of the signs have since been removed, and the outcome of the coalition’s efforts remains to be seen as Election time approaches.
“My administration will remain focused on delivering results for the people of Wicomico County. I trust the voters to see through political theater and recognize it for what it is,” Giordano said.
