Orthopedic Robotic Integration with TidalHealth
SALISBURY, Md. – In this week’s edition of TidalHealth, brought to you by TidalHealth, WMDT spoke with Dr. Scott Gelman, an orthopedist specializing in adult reconstruction at the new TidalHealth Peninsula Orthopaedic Institute.
Dr. Gelman tells WMDT that the new institute will have beneficial impacts for the community, as it will allow patients to have opportunities to get in with providers that specialize in every aspect of orthopedics. Further, new health technology comes alongside the new location.
“And within each specialty, you are seeing robotic applications,” Dr. Gelman explained. “So whether that is hip replacement, knee replacement, partial knee replacement, shoulder replacement, you’re going to see robotics being introduced into each one of these fields more and more over time.”
Dr. Gelman says the technological advancements have increased the level of individualized care patients are receiving. Robotic planning and CT scans have allowed doctors to retire traditional screening methods like x-rays and calipers.
“Robotic technology over time, I think, will allow us to improve patient outcomes. Right now, it’s giving us a lot of extra information, allowing us to create a very individualized plan for patients,” Dr. Gelman added. “And hopefully, over time, we’ll learn how these very individualized plans will create better outcomes for patients, hopefully letting them recover faster, having less pain, and getting back to the things they want to do.”
To Dr. Gelman, the most exciting part about the TidalHealth Peninsula Orthopedic Institute is its ability to provide patients access to world class specialty care close to home. He also hinted at plans being made for introducing surgery centers in Sussex County, Delaware.
