MILLSBORO, Del. – The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company (IRVFC) conducted a water rescue on Thursday after a vehicle drove into a golf course pond in Millsboro.

Just before 6:15 a.m. on Jul. 9, the Indian River, Dagsboro, and Millsboro fire companies were alerted for a water rescue incident on John J. Williams Highway and Baywoods. It was reported that a vehicle was driving in the golf area of Baywood when hit a tree and went into the pond.

Crews worked to stabilize the vehicle and extricate the driver. The tree that was struck also had to be removed from the area. One person in the vehicle was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

IRVFC says stabilizing a vehicle submerged or floating in a golf course pond requires hazard assessment and water rescue protocols. To secure the vehicle, crews worked to prioritize tethering the car to a solid land anchor, establishing a safe working perimeter on the banks, and ensuring rescue personnel wear water personal protective equipment.

The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated traffic control for the duration of the incident, while Coastal Towing was utilized to remove the vehicle from the pond. The Delaware State Police are reportedly investigating the accident.
