Cooling Centers Open on Delmarva Amid Soaring Temperatures

DELMARVA – Counties are designating sites as cooling centers ahead of record-breaking temperatures expected to blanket the Delmarva Peninsula this weekend.

With temperatures forecasted to soar above 100 degrees, Delmarvans are advised to stay indoors as much as possible. The following locations are offering free air-conditioning to help residents keep cool.

Kent County

The Delaware Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) has opened cooling centers across the state to provide residents with a safe place to escape the heat.

Sussex County’s Department of Public Safety has established four cooling centers in addition to the ones established by DHSS; all seven are listed below.

The Dorchester County Health Department has several cooling centers located in Cambridge and Hurlock. Additionally, Jones Mini Mart on Pine Street in Cambridge offers free water.

Talbot County Emergency Services have designated five locations as cooling centers. Because hours and availability are subject to change, residents are advised to call centers ahead of arrival for the most up-to-date information and guidelines.

Wicomico County

The Wicomico County Health Department tells WMDT they plan to open an additional cooling center later this week, but details have not been provided at this time.

The Worcester County Health Department says residents should look to their local libraries and recreational centers for spots to cool down. You can find Worcester County Public Library branch information below. Please note all locations will be closed on Saturday, Jul. 4, for the holiday, and remained closed on Sunday, Jul. 5, per normal operating hours.
