ACCOMACK COUNTY, Va. — Northern Accomack Community Cats is on a mission to TNR (Trap-Neuter or Spay-Release) 200 cats in Accomack and Northampton Counties over a four-day period.

TNR is a method for controlling feral and free-roaming cat populations without euthanasia. The process involves humanely trapping cats, neutering or spaying them, then releasing them back to their original location.

President of Northern Accomack Community Cats Margie Spangler says since the organization was founded in 2020, they have spayed/neutered around 2,500 cats.

“We don’t need any more kittens born into this cruel world where they’re going to suffer and die. The only humane thing to do is to get these cats spayed and neutered so they can live out happy lives outside,” Spangler said.

Spangler added that NACC has over 500 cats on their list waiting to be spayed/neutered. NACC provides “trap training” for caregivers of outdoor cats and large colonies to begin the TNR process. “Their caregivers care and they love their outside cats, and they just want to do what’s right for them, so they register with us, we put them on a list, and we get their cats spayed and neutered for them,” Spangler said.

On Wednesday, NACC and Island Kitties Rescue neutered 22 male cats, and spayed 28 females. The nonprofits also treated cats with wounds or cold symptoms with Covenia shots.
