Local women celebrates 105th Birthday, credits faith for longevity

DELMARVA – Alva Naomi Handy Bell is celebrating a milestone birthday after turning 105 years old, surrounded by family, memories and a lifetime of stories stretching back more than a century.

Alva Naomi Handy Bell said her faith in God has been the key to her long life. Sitting comfortably while reflecting on decades of change, she shared memories of growing up on a farm, traveling by horse and buggy and living through generations of history.

“I made it because of God,” she said with a smile.

Born in the early 1920s, Alva recalled a simpler way of life, where hard work and family were at the center of each day. She said life on the farm taught her discipline and gratitude from a young age.

Over the years, she witnessed major changes in technology, transportation and everyday life, but said she has always tried to stay positive and appreciate each moment.

Family members described Alva as loving, strong and full of wisdom, saying she continues to inspire everyone around her with her outlook on life.

Even at 105 years old, she said she plans to keep enjoying life and spending time with the people she loves most.

The birthday celebration brought together friends and relatives to honor her remarkable journey and the many generations she has impacted along the way.
